Updated

An X728 advertised as Special Edition raises two questions: what Deere specified for that package, and what remains fitted to the tractor today. Check the original records alongside the machine. A replacement seat or changed wheels can affect a parts inquiry, while a collection of SE-style accessories cannot establish how the tractor was originally ordered.

What the dated X728 SE package included

Deere's U.S. book dated December 18, 2012 identifies code 4939M as the X728 full-time four-wheel-drive tractor with the Special Edition package, less deck. It lists:

  • an adjustable high-back seat with armrests;
  • a front brushguard;
  • styled front and rear wheels;
  • front fenders;
  • heavy-duty all-purpose tires.

This is a dated equipment record; it does not establish the original specification of every tractor advertised as an X728 SE. The Deere-authored book is available through a .

Treat original configuration and current condition as separate findings. Original sales or order paperwork can help establish the former. Inspection documents the latter. If a piece is missing, ask whether it was removed, replaced or never supplied with that particular machine; leave the answer unresolved when there is no supporting record.

Record the machine before comparing parts

Photograph the full product identification number (PIN), then copy it exactly into your notes. Deere's covers the X728 family from PIN 050001 onward and asks owners to record machine and engine identification. Check that the manual used for the inquiry covers the actual tractor.

For X728 machines within OMM161728's coverage, Deere lists a two-cylinder FD750D EFI gasoline engine in the . A description calling this a three-cylinder diesel needs correction before an engine-parts inquiry. Record the installed engine's identification as well, especially if replacement history is uncertain.

Inspect the fitted SE seat

Start with the whole assembly. A photograph of the yellow cushion alone leaves the base and adjustment hardware unidentified. Compare the fitted controls with the matching manual, and note any missing knobs, damaged brackets, torn upholstery or visible alterations. Ask the seller to demonstrate the adjustments with the tractor parked according to its operator's manual.

OMM161728 separates its Special Edition seat instructions from the standard-seat arrangement. Its show a slide adjustment and an operator-weight suspension control with a gauge. The identifies back-angle, lumbar and armrest adjustments. Use those references to identify the controls on the seat in front of you; a later replacement may have a different layout.

On the SE seat illustrated in OMM161728, the back-angle knob is on the right and the lumbar knob is on the left. Include both sides in the seat photographs so the supplier can identify which control needs attention.

Record each adjustment as demonstrated, not demonstrated or visibly damaged. If a control is present but does not work, describe that fault when requesting parts. If the base or wiring has been altered, have the assembly assessed before selecting a replacement. Matching color and armrests alone leaves mounting and control compatibility unverified.

Check the wheel arrangement before adding weights

The wheel fitted today matters when asking about weight hardware. Deere's places BM21497 in its historical X700 equipment section and specifies two adapters for Special Edition tractors through model year 2012. That dated application is a reference for an inquiry, not confirmation of present availability or fit on altered wheels.

Deere's identifies one mounting ring per kit and illustrates the ring with an SE wheel. Confirm both the contents of each kit and the total required for the proposed installation. Ask the parts supplier to check the intended weight, wheel, adapter and mounting hardware together against the tractor's identifiers. Do not select a weight solely because its listing mentions X728.

If the wheels have been changed, supply photographs of the current arrangement and any part markings. Leave adapter choice open until that configuration has been verified. This guide does not prescribe ballast quantities or a wheel-removal procedure.

Make the parts inquiry specific

Send:

  • the full PIN;
  • the affected assembly's identifiers;
  • clear photographs;
  • a short description of the fault or intended accessory.

Separate what the paperwork confirms from what you can only observe. For an unproven original SE configuration, say so; for a visibly replaced seat or wheel, identify the replacement if possible.

Before ordering, ask for the exact part number and the application evidence for that configuration, including any serial-number or hardware restrictions. Keep unresolved fields in the inquiry rather than filling them from another X728 advertisement. The useful result is a parts answer tied to this tractor and its fitted equipment.
