Updated

John Deere’s December 2012 US book describes the X749 with four-wheel steering and full-time four-wheel drive. Steering describes wheel direction; drive describes powered wheels. Keep them separate when checking a listing.

A useful listing should let you identify the tractor, the equipment attached to it and the work you intend to do. Start with readable plate photographs. Then turn each unanswered question into a specific request to the seller, rather than filling the gap with a specification copied from another tractor.

Identify steering and drive separately

If a seller writes “all-wheel,” ask which feature the description refers to. Have the seller describe the steering arrangement and drive system separately. Keep the seller’s answers beside the machine identification photograph.

For a machine being considered for use around planting beds or gates, write down the actual route and obstacles you need to discuss. A model description alone does not demonstrate how a particular machine will perform on your property.

Match the diesel manual to the fitted engine

Manual editionStated PIN floorListed diesel engine
050001–3TNV76
070001–3TNM72

Both editions list three-cylinder, liquid-cooled diesels. Their PIN floors describe manual editions, not a proven engine-change boundary. , .

Photograph the installed engine plate as well as the tractor PIN. Put these in one record:

  • the engine identifier;
  • manual number;
  • any replacement-engine paperwork.

If these disagree, ask the parts counter to resolve the installed application before selecting a consumable. An old service receipt is useful evidence to examine; it is not a substitute for identifying what is on the tractor now.

Before ordering for your X749, confirm the fitted engine, full PIN and current Deere part number.

A rear-PTO inquiry needs the transmission identity

The dated book separates these rear-PTO applications:

Book referenceX749 serial and/or transmission prefix
BM23588M0X749A050496– and/or K00
BM21914Through M0X749A050495 and/or K02/K03

This is dated application information, not a current ordering approval or an engine-change boundary.

For a PTO inquiry, send the full tractor PIN and a readable transmission identification photograph together. State whether you are asking about a complete installation, a missing component or a replacement for an existing assembly. Ask for the current application and number in writing. When the seller cannot supply the transmission information, leave that purchase question unresolved rather than guessing from the hood badge.

Record the deck and seat actually fitted

The dated book offered the tractor less deck and listed seat conversions.

Itemize the equipment in the sale. For the deck, request its identification and photographs showing what is included. For the seat, distinguish the cushion or seat unit from its mounting assembly. An advertised seat upgrade should come with an explanation of the included hardware.

Close-up photographs belong beside the relevant item on the list. Use those photographs to ask about a missing bracket or an unclear label without restarting the discussion. It also avoids treating every accessory visible in a listing photograph as part of the agreed sale.

Build a parts request around the component

Use a short record for each question rather than a shopping list based only on “X749.”

QuestionRecord to prepare
Engine consumableTractor PIN, installed engine identifier, current application confirmation
Cutting componentFitted deck identification, component required, assembly photograph
Steering or drive componentWhich system needs attention, assembly identification, clear photographs
Seat componentSeat unit or mounting hardware, existing arrangement, item requested
Rear PTOFull tractor and transmission identification, existing equipment, intended installation

Keep the part number, date of the lookup and supplier’s application response with the record. If a search result lists only the tractor name, request the missing confirmation before using it as the basis for an order.

Decide what still needs an answer

Before committing to a used X749, make two lists: equipment the seller has documented and items still unresolved. Ask for a corrected equipment list if a description and photograph disagree. Keep an unanswered attachment or parts question visible in the decision instead of silently accepting it.

The actual machine, its records and a current application lookup remain necessary for a particular parts decision.

  1. I’ve heard some mixed reviews about the maintenance costs. Is it true that parts are expensive? 🤔

    1. I think it’s worth it for the quality! But yeah, some parts can be pricey, so just be prepared.

  2. I’m torn between the X749 and another brand. The specs look great, but I heard some complaints about the price. Is it really worth it?

    1. That’s a fair point, Chris. The durability and efficiency can really pay off in the long run, especially if you plan to use it frequently.

    2. I think it depends on what you’re using it for. If you have a large yard, it’s worth the investment!

  3. Anyone else had issues with the battery life? Mine seems to die quicker than I expected after just a few uses. 😕

    1. Hey Derek, I had that issue initially too! Turned out I was leaving the lights on. Just a thought!

  4. Just got my John Deere X749 and I’m loving it! 🎉 The power is unreal, I’ve mowed my entire lawn in half the time it used to take me. Plus, those features are top-notch! Can’t wait to try the attachments. Anyone have tips on maintaining it?

    1. Congrats! I’ve had mine for a year now and maintenance is key. Just keep up with the oil changes and check the filters regularly.

    2. Glad to hear you’re enjoying it, Tommy! For maintenance, make sure to clean the deck after mowing to keep it in shape.

  5. I’ve been using my X749 for a while now, and I can’t believe how much time I save. The performance is incredible! Plus, it looks cool too 😎. What do you all think about the warranty?

    1. I think the warranty is decent! I needed a part replaced under warranty and they handled it pretty quickly.

  6. Man, I gotta say, the comfort on this tractor is unreal. I can mow for hours without feeling like I’ve been hit by a truck afterward. 😂

  7. Just wondering if the X749 is worth it for a small yard? I don’t want to overspend for something I won’t use much.

    1. Totally depends on your plans! If you want to do more than just mow, the X749 can handle attachments really well.

  8. I’m not sure about this model. I mean, does it really perform well in rough terrain? My yard has some crazy bumps and dips.

    1. I’ve tested it on uneven ground and it did just fine! Just take it slow on the really bumpy spots.

  9. I’m really interested in the comfort features you mentioned. I’ve had back problems in the past and I don’t want to end up regretting my purchase. How comfortable is it really for long mowing sessions?

    1. Honestly, it’s pretty comfy! I did a 3-hour mow last weekend and felt fine afterward. The seat is really cushy.
