John Deere 6140D Tractor: Identity and Buying Checks

Before using a John Deere 6140D specification, match the tractor’s product identification number (PIN), engine identifiers and market to the document. Deere lists several regional and serial groups for this model. The badge and a horsepower figure leave important equipment questions unanswered.

Identify the 6140D and the specification’s scope

Start with photographs of the machine PIN and engine identification, then record the cab or open operator station, installed transmission, drive axle and attachments. In Deere’s publication search, select the exact 6140D base unit and check its serial range and edition. The results distinguish North American serial groups from export and other regional entries; an attachment entry is a separate classification.

For transport or storage, obtain dimensions and weight for the actual configuration, including installed loader, implements, tyres and ballast. Record the source and configuration beside each figure rather than using a bare model-wide dimension or weight.

List optional and fitted equipment separately from base equipment. A cab, loader or other accessory shown in a sales photograph needs its own identification and inclusion in the sale record.

Choose maintenance information for the right machine

Deere publishes a 6D Tier 3 replacement-parts guide dated April 2022 and a separate 6D iT4 guide dated March 2021; both name the 6140D. Their model groups and some listed components differ. Match the engine/emissions configuration and publication coverage before using either guide. Use the matching operator’s manual for the full instructions; the Tier 3 guide explicitly refers readers to it for additional details.

For example, the approximate crankcase-with-filter tables on page 2 list 12 L in the April 2022 Tier 3 guide and 15 L in the March 2021 iT4 guide. This difference is a reason to check document applicability; neither figure is a filling instruction for an unidentified tractor. Confirm the quantity and checking procedure in the matching manual.

Use the applicable manual to establish the service operation, interval, specified fluid and level-check procedure. Do not adopt a blanket 100-hour oil-change instruction from an owner story or buy a filter merely because a retailer lists “6140D”.

For condition and repair planning, ask for dated service invoices and a qualified inspection of concerns such as leaks, wear or corrosion. General claims about reinforced construction or long life do not establish the condition of the tractor being sold.

Deere's April 2022 Tier 3 and March 2021 iT4 guides list RE541922 as the primary fuel filter for groups including the 6140D. The final or secondary filter is listed separately. Use the guide and operator's manual for your tractor's PIN and engine to confirm the required number.

Compare the tractor with the work you need
