Updated

This guide covers the John Deere 400 garden tractor. If you mean the industrial machine, use the separate 400 backhoe-loader guide.

Deere’s SM2103, dated March 1982 and reproduced by Jensales, lists a Kohler K532QS with two cylinders and air cooling. Its contents separate the hydrostatic transmission, two-speed rear axle and power steering. .

The Jensales wrappers state that these reproductions lack Deere authorization and disclaim Deere responsibility for their quality or accuracy. Current serial-specific applications and supersessions still require confirmation.

Use the historical reference when asking about the actual machine. Establish what is fitted, what has changed and what remains unidentified before selecting parts or agreeing an equipment list.

Identify the engine actually installed

Request a readable engine identification photograph alongside the tractor’s identification record. Keep replacement-engine paperwork with it if available. If the installed engine differs from the historical reference, base the next inquiry on the installed engine. Do not carry over the old specification.

Ask what the seller means by “rebuilt” or “replaced.” Does the statement concern a complete engine, a component or work described on an invoice? Record the answer as the seller’s account and attach any supporting paperwork. Keep an undocumented claim marked as unverified.

A historical air-filter number needs an assembly check

The SM2103 preview gives these dated air-filter entries:

Historical serial branchOld filter reference
Through 80000M47494
From 80001AM34093

These are research leads, not confirmed current replacements. Check the fitted engine and air-cleaner assembly before ordering.

Send photographs of the housing and readable markings with the tractor record. Describe whether the question concerns an element, the housing or a missing assembly. Ask the parts supplier to confirm the current application and number. Do not use a model-name-only product listing to settle an unresolved match.

Give each system its own inquiry

When asking about drive, rear-axle or steering equipment, name the assembly in question and keep its identification or photographs with the request. A receipt for engine work does not establish what happened to another assembly.

Separate identification from diagnosis. Describe what needs professional assessment without assigning a failed part from a sale photograph. For an unexplained modification or unclear repair, request the relevant history and an assessment of the actual installation.

Record complete equipment, changes and unknowns

Prepare one equipment record with three labels:

  • Present: what the seller includes, with identification and photographs.
  • Changed: what was replaced or modified, with the available history.
  • Unknown: missing identification, unexplained parts or unanswered fit questions.

For a deck or other implement, list the mounting hardware as well as the main unit. Ask which brackets, connections and loose items are included. A named implement and a photograph of it beside the tractor do not define a complete installation.

Before committing, agree the included equipment using this record. If a photograph and description conflict, ask for a corrected list. Keep any still-missing item visible in the decision instead of assuming it will arrive with the machine.

Decide what the records do not establish

Matching an identifier does not establish condition. Ask a qualified technician to assess unresolved repairs or operation; a historical specification cannot certify the condition of a particular used tractor.

The reproduced PC1475 table has an open 1979 row; it does not establish the final production year. .
