John Deere 140 Garden Tractor

This guide covers the older John Deere 140 garden tractor, not the later D140 lawn tractor. The similar numbers identify different equipment records. Deere’s D-series manual lists D140 among models such as D110, D125 and D160, so its specifications and service steps should not be applied to a vintage 140.

Separate the 140 from D140

Compare the complete model name on the identification plate, not only a listing title. The D-series operator manual is useful for recognizing the later D140 record; it is not the manual for the vintage garden tractor on this page.

Verify engine, deck and attachment fit

  • Write down the tractor serial number and use it to locate the matching publication.
  • Check the engine’s identification plate independently; do not assume that a horsepower label applies to a machine with a replacement engine.
  • Record the mower deck model and attachment part numbers. Verify each mount and drive connection in Deere’s parts information.
  • When records conflict, pause the order and ask a Deere dealer to confirm the exact machine configuration.

A first-pass inspection

Ask for service and repair records. Check the parked machine for visible leaks, corrosion, damaged wiring, missing guards and non-matching hardware. If it is demonstrated, observe start-up, steering, brakes and drive operation as described in its operator’s manual. Do not reach near hot or moving components. These checks identify items for a technician; they do not confirm internal condition.

Find the correct Deere record

Search John Deere Manuals & Training for the publication matching the tractor. Use the model and serial selector for parts and attachments. Browse vintage John Deere garden tractors.
