There is no single oil-change specification for every John Deere machine. Oil type and viscosity, fill quantity, filter, and service interval depend on the engine and machine; climate and duty cycle can also affect the instructions. Identify the engine and use its operator’s manual before buying a kit or draining oil.
Before you start
- Record the machine model, PIN, engine model, and engine serial number.
- Use the correct manual to confirm oil specification, amount, filter, interval, warm-up or cool-down instructions, and drain procedure.
- Gather the specified filter and sealing parts, a suitable drain pan, and a safe way to collect used oil.
- Park on a level surface and secure the machine as directed in its manual.
Follow the manual’s sequence
- Let hot components cool to the temperature stated in the manual. Prevent an unexpected start.
- Position the drain pan and remove the drain plug using the specified procedure. Avoid contact with hot oil.
- Replace the filter and seal as instructed. Do not overtighten or reuse a seal unless the manual says to.
- Add the specified oil gradually. Check the level with the stated dipstick or sight method; do not exceed the marked range.
- Run the engine only if the procedure calls for it, inspect for leaks from a safe position, shut it down, and recheck the level after the specified wait.
- Record the date, engine hours, oil, and filter part number; dispose of used oil and filter through an appropriate collection service.
Do not choose by the machine’s color or model family
Two machines in the same product family may use different engines or filters. A kit listing must match the actual engine and PIN range. Deere’s oil, filters, grease, and coolants page also directs owners to the operator’s manual for the recommended viscosity. Use Deere technical publications for the procedure and the parts catalog for applicability.
If the manual is missing, the engine label is unreadable, or a previous owner changed the engine, confirm the configuration before service. For hydraulic or transmission fluid, use the separate machine-specific section; engine oil instructions do not apply.
